500th student passes through Makers Academy bootcamp doors

Makers Academy, Europe’s number one developer bootcamp, celebrated the graduation of its 500th student, three years after opening their doors in London

To honour the occasion, the bootcamp opened its doors to members of the public to give behind the scenes access to the brilliant and bizarre world of a coding academy. Past and present students also gathered alongside the Makers Academy team to hear presentations from the graduates on their final app projects, all of whom are now searching for their first Junior Developer role. Apps presented ranged from a museum passport, to keep children engaged while visiting museums, to an interactive surf map enabling avid surfers to seek out the best waves.

Makers Academy, originally set up to fill a gap in the market between university education and the needs of industry, provides a specific route for individuals looking to kick-start their coding careers in the technology sector. Research conducted by Makers Academy highlighted that 97 percent of students* who completed the 12 week course say that it has improved their lives.

a Makers Academy graduate from the first ever cohort in 2013, spoke to the graduates at the event: “I was a teacher for six years before I decided I wanted to change careers. The opportunity came up to take part in the first Makers Academy course and I jumped at it. I was taught coding best practice by some of the best coders in London and the skills I learnt gave me the solid foundations I needed to be a good coder. Since then I have been lucky to work at Lastminute.com and now Lloyds Online Doctor – Makers Academy has opened doors to new opportunities for me which I didn’t think would be possible.”

Makers Academy works closely with a range of organisations, from start-ups and SMEs, to big corporations and the UK Government, assisting their recruitment channels throughout the hiring process, supplying them with the right people and the right skills for their organisations. The latest graduates are now looking to secure their first ever Junior Developer job roles in the coming weeks with the help of Makers Academy and its hiring partners.

Evgeny Shadchnev, Co-founder and CEO at Makers Academy, said: “Makers Academy was founded in response to a lack of trained developers in the market. We wanted to offer a vocational alternative to university that provided people with the necessary programming skills to pursue a career in the technology sector. From humble beginnings with just nine students on our first course to celebrating our 500th graduate a mere three years later – this event was a great opportunity to showcase the amazing talent coming through the doors of our coding bootcamp.

“It also provided a platform to thank the dedicated team at Makers, who work tirelessly to ensure that our students receive a first-class education, and the necessary support through the job hunting process, to guarantee they land their dream job.”
