Loughborough Student wins Gold at the Commonwealth Youth Judo Championships

Current Loughborough University student, Rhys Thompson, has won Gold at the Commonwealth Youth Judo Championships in South Africa.

As a 2nd year student studying Sport and Exercise Science, Thompson receives a Sports Scholarship from Loughborough. His training is split between the facilities at Loughborough University and the Centre of Excellence in Walsall, so the scholarship helps to assist with training costs, allowing Thompson to achieve success in Judo alongside completing his degree.

Thompson is currently ranked no.1 in Great Britain at U90kg for U21, and he has had a very successful year. His achievements include Gold medals at BUCS, the British Junior Championships, and the Senior Commonwealth Judo Championships, and Bronze medals in both the British Senior Championships and the Junior European Cup Coimbra.

Speaking of his success, Thompson said:
I’m really pleased with the result in South Africa and how this year has gone so far. After all the hard work, it’s great that everything is coming together and I’m getting some good results. The main aim for this year is to qualify for the Junior European Championships in Spain.
