Luke Piggott Chosen as Flag Bearer for Team GBR
Cardiff University's Luke Piggott (men’s Ice Hockey) will carry the flag for Great Britain at the Opening Ceremony of the 26th Winter Universiade, Trentino 2013.
Luke, who is participating in his third World University Winter Games having previously represented GBR in Torino 2007 and Harbin 2009, will captain the Men’s Ice Hockey team in Trentino and was chosen in a ballot of Great Britain Team Managers.
Earlier this year he completed a PhD in cancer research at Cardiff University, publishing a paper about a treatment he discovered that prevented the spread and relapse of breast cancer.
He is also in his third year as a full-time player for the Cardiff Devils in the Elite League, the highest level of men’s ice hockey in the UK. He helped them to the final of the Elite League play-offs in 2011-12 and the semi-finals in 2012-13, also picking up the award for the team’s most improved player in the latter season.
The other contenders for the honour, Saffron Allen (Women’s Ice Hockey) and Kyle Smith (Men’s Curling), were also worthy candidates.
Aged only 18, Saffron Allen (Solihull College) is already a regular member of the GB Women’s senior team. She has had to recover from a serious spinal injury sustained playing in China last November, working hard to regain her full fitness and thus ensuring she will be a key part of the GBR squad in Trentino.
Kyle Smith (Scottish Rural College) was skip for Scotland at the 2013 World Junior Curling Championships in Sochi, Russia, where the team won gold (having won bronze in 2012). Kyle and his team will hope to transfer their performances from that competition to the World University Games next month.
The Opening Ceremony of the 26th Winter Universiade takes place on Wednesday 11th December in Trentino Italy kicking off the start of Games and 11 days of competition
