Students Fight Back Against Rogue Landlords
Students are harnessing the power of reviews to take action against second-rate accommodation and landlords.
Gone are the days in which students viewed living in grubby digs as a rite of passage. Accommodation costs have doubled over the last 10 years with students forking out more than £5,000 a year on average for their accommodation. Yet, the standards of accommodation are as bad as ever; 76% of students in private accommodation experience problems with their property with a staggering one in four suffering from vermin infestations
These figures coupled with growing unrest and dissatisfaction has led one former student to do something about it. Raff Mckenzie, a graduate from the University of Manchester, has launched StudentView - a TripAdvisor style website for student accommodation.
By allowing students to review their accommodation and landlord StudentView is switching the balance of power. These reliable reviews offer some much needed transparency in an industry rife with rogue landlords who until now have faced little or no accountability for their actions.
‘the industry is in dire need of a shake-up. Many students have never lived away from home before, let alone rented and as a result of this lack of experience they are regularly being exploited. StudentView is providing the information that actually matters which in turn will offer the peace of mind they need when searching accommodation.’ says founder Raff Mckenzie
StudentView is providing a real solution to a real problem. The risks involved are undeniable and the effects this can have on students are often underestimated; Pete Mercer (ex Vice President for Welfare at the NUS) states that ‘few students can be expected to reach their maximum academic or social potential in poor accommodation’ .
As well as offering students everywhere the power to fight back, StudentView is also providing ALL students who leave a review with a set of great rewards. Boasting partners such as Uber, Domino’s, Spotify, Hassle and Festicket StudentView is giving students even more of an incentive to leave a review.
Raff is keen to point out that the company is not all about bashing landlords: ‘StudentView is all about transparency. We want students to champion the best providers and give them the credit they deserve, whilst forcing the poorer performers to take accountability for their actions.’
