A Late Quartet [15]

Set in New York City, A LATE QUARTET follows the fortunes of a world-renowned string quartet.

Bound together by their passion for music, particularly for Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14, Opus 131, the four musicians are fast approaching their 25th anniversary performance. But when veteran cellist Peter (Walken) is diagnosed with Parkinson’s and suddenly announces his retirement, the repercussions threaten to tear the group apart.

Exquisitely photographed by cinematographer Frederick Elmes (THE ICE STORM, SYNECDOCHE NEW YORK) and graced with wonderful performances, especially by Walken and Hoffman, the film packs plenty of emotional drama, but it also offers a moving meditation on the ways in which great artists who work together must struggle to remain more than the sum of their parts – despite the sometimes terrible costs to the individual artists.
