High quality work. High quality clients.
Understandably, to make an informed career decision, you need to know who we are, where we are, who we work with, what we do for them – and what we can do for you. Before that, a quick bit of context. Law’s a tool to get things done, and we’ve gained a reputation for seeing the bigger picture, then delivering sharp, creative, insightful legal advice and solutions.
We’re a UK-headquartered international law firm. We provide a full service to clients worldwide, and we’re a trusted adviser to FTSE 100 and 250 companies, multi-national corporations, financial institutions, and government departments. In the last financial year, we generated a £120.5 million turnover. In 2013’s Legal 500 UK, we had 15 ‘leading individuals’. Chambers UK rates 79 Wragge & Co experts as ‘recommended’. Today, clients want ideas and solutions from lawyers who aren’t afraid of a blank sheet of paper. So we make things happen, whether you’re an experienced lawyer or ambitious trainee.
All about you
We expect a lot from our trainees. You’ll need to be hard-working, dedicated and enthusiastic for a challenge. In return, we guarantee the support and training needed to develop yourcareer, and to become the lawyer you want to be.
We’ll give you early responsibility, your own files and plenty of client contact. There’ll be lots to take in and take on, so you’ll need to be bright and intellectually agile, with the ability to think like a client. You’ll always want to know more – and know why. You’ll ask the right questions to make sure you get the right answers. Dedication and attention to detail are definitely needed too.
We’re proud to be a firm of individuals, a firm that doesn’t have a ‘type’. That’s why, when it comes to recruitment, we look at the whole you. Not just the academic bit. We don’t ask for certain grades at A-level or degree. That feels a bit rigid to us.
We look for bright, intelligent people and we’ve put together a selection procedure that will measure whether you have the skills
What we’ll do for you
We’re fully paid-up members of the ‘learning by doing’ club. Doing here means early responsibility, high-profile work, regular partner contact, ample client exposure and generous support.
There’s no sitting on the sidelines. No watching and waiting. Because it’s not enough to get qualified: you’ve got to get experienced.
In-depth training? Absolutely. We’re proud to have been recognised as one of the legal industry’s best trainers and recruiters. It cements our commitment to developing technically excellent, commercially focused lawyers
Your training and development
Big on personality? Absolutely. Big on trainees? Without a doubt. Big trainee intake? Now you come to mention it, not really. Having a small trainee intake means that we can concentrate on you and your training needs. We make the effort and take the time to get to know you and the kind of lawyer you want to be.
In terms of numbers, we recruit around 15 trainees into our Birmingham office, and five trainees into our London office (trainees for our 2016 London training contracts will be recruited solely from our 2014 London vacation scheme).
Everything starts with a thorough induction, which includes training on IT, office systems and procedures, finance, billing and client care. Meanwhile, you’ll have your own minder, a trainee lawyer skilled in the ways of professional life at Wragge & Co.
Then there’s the graduate recruitment team. They’re on hand to make sure you’re getting the most from your training contract. You’ll have a principal too – a partner to act as a mentor throughout your training contract. And for every six-month seat, you’ll have a supervisor.
But what happens when you qualify? The quick answer is whatever you want. Go global? Here’s your ticket. Want to make partner? Let’s talk about how to get you there. Like everything here at Wragge & Co, it’s about you.
Your benefits and rewards
So you’ve read about what we do and how we do it. You’ve heard from some of our people. You’ll have a decent idea about our culture and what you can expect from us – and why, we believe, we’re a brilliant place to start your legal career.
Now down to money. In your first year, your annual salary will be £26,250 (Birmingham) or £36,250 (London). In your second year, that goes up to £29,250 and £39,250 for Birmingham and London respectively. When you qualify, we’ll up it again to £38,000 (Birmingham) or £61,000 (London).
We’ll also cover your graduate Diploma in Law (gDL) and Legal Practice Course (LPC) fees, and we’ll give you a maintenance grant for each course.
Mind you, it’s not just about the salary, important though it is. For us, the whole benefits and reward package goes back to something we said earlier in this brochure. About how we look at the whole you. For example, we offer a £1,000 interest-free loan to help get you started. This might come in useful when moving to a new city.
