Postgraduate Certificate Education with QTS

The training programme combines school experience with Professional Studies and Subject Knowledge Development.  The PGCE assessment concurs with the University of Chichester’s Academic Regulations for the award of FHEQ Level 6 qualifications.  The combination of school experience and academic study enables you to link theory with practice, helping you to develop as a reflective practitioner.  You will receive a minimum of 60 training days during your training year. 

Non-salaried training programme
Although your training is based in a school, you are not employed by a school, and in many ways your training will be similar to training programmes in universities and colleges. You will pay fees but you might be eligible for funding through tuition fee loans, training bursaries or scholarships. 

Distinctive Features
This is a school-based ITT programme offered by the Hampshire LEARN SCITT Partnership, leading to QTS and PGCE (awarded by the University of Chichester).  All other training is provided by LEARN Alliance partnership schools.  The quality of provision is assured by the Hampshire LEARN SCITT Partnership.   Trainees register with the Hampshire LEARN SCITT Partnership at the beginning of September. Training will be in LEARN Alliance schools.

It will be possible for trainees to be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status by meeting the Teachers’ Standards at Grade 3 or above without a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. A trainee may complete her/his professional experience successfully but not reach the academic level required for the award of Professional Graduate Certificate at FHEQ level 6. In this case an alternative academic assessment is offered, successful completion of which leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

Programme Rationale
The programme leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status and a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. The programme ensures that trainees receive at least 60 days’ training as well as extensive professional experience in school.  The programme conforms to the DfE Teachers’ Standards 2012 and the ITT Criteria 2012. 

The programme provides a comprehensive and progressive framework of training which shows clearly how trainees will be prepared to meet the Teachers’ Standards.   It shows how elements of the programme will be tracked through whole cohort training days/sessions, individual subject specialisms and school experience. At the same time there is built in flexibility for partner schools to maximise the opportunities presented by their particular circumstances. 

Trainees study the relevant national frameworks in their subject area for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 and develop their understanding of subject specific pedagogy; they develop their understanding of the pupils’ experience immediately before and after their chosen age phase. Furthermore, they develop their understanding of the place of the teacher in a whole school context and in relation to their further career development.

The effective delivery of ITT in this programme is ensured through:

  • a network of schools within a well-developed partnership
  • strong links between theory and practice in teaching
  • trained mentors and tutors
  • a consensual view of teaching as an intellectual activity

Subject Knowledge Development
The development of subject knowledge is a fundamental part of your overall development as a teacher.  In this programme, a number of training days are devoted to the development of curriculum subject knowledge.  Trainees should also undertake private study related to subject knowledge.

You will be asked to complete a Subject Knowledge audit before the programme begins and at three more points during the course so that we can track your progress and help you to close any gaps in your subject knowledge.

You will be given considerable support in developing your subject knowledge throughout the course.  Subject knowledge training is provided by Lead Subject Tutors through taught sessions and your Curriculum Mentor in school will work with you on a personalised training plan to ensure that your subject knowledge continues to develop throughout the course.

Training and assessment for QTS
During the year, you will spend the majority of your time in your home school where you will be working closely with your mentor and other key colleagues who will be able to support your professional development. You will be given information about how your teaching timetable is constructed and phased, along with details of the training programme and assessment for QTS against the Teachers’ Standards.  

Preparation and assessment
The University of Chichester delivers aspects of training and provides academic support with the preparation, assessment and moderation of (PGCE) assignments.
Trainees will be awarded Professional Graduate Certificate of Education at Honours level.  Trainees are able to gain Masters level credits in their NQT year if they undertake the Conversion Programme delivered by the University of Chichester.

University of Chichester
We are in partnership with the University of Chichester which has a long-established record of excellent initial teacher training and is graded 'Outstanding' by Ofsted. We have created a training package which is tailored to maximise the strengths of both school and university training. From the very start of your training, you will be part of the teaching team in your school. Your programme will include training days across a number of schools in the Hampshire LEARN SCITT Partnership, training in your own school, subject specialist days led by outstanding practitioners and personalised training. Expert support by experienced mentors and tutors will help you to develop and refine your teaching skills.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this programme, trainees will gain QTS and a PGCE.  Trainees will also show that they:

  • have high expectations of all pupils, treat them with appropriate respect, consistency and consideration
  • demonstrate and promote positive values, attitudes and behaviour
  • are aware of their professional responsibilities and take responsibility for their own professional development
  • can work with others to promote the learning and welfare of young people
  • can adopt a reflective and critical stance towards their own practice, policy initiatives and listen to and act upon advice
  • have a secure knowledge and understanding of their specialist subject
  • know the relevant curriculum frameworks within which they teach and be able to apply these effectively
  • are able to use assessment to promote learning and develop their teaching
  • know how to handle classes effectively to maximise learning
  • know how to take account of the needs of all learners
  • are able to plan and teach lessons that engage and interest pupils and allow them to make appropriate progress
  • are able to draw upon research evidence and professional practice critically to inform their teaching and to underpin their teaching approach (PGCE)

All the Aims and Learning Outcomes are explicitly linked to the Teachers’ Standards.
Ultimately the development of the trainee will be shaped by a range of perspectives – in two different schools working with different priorities and different people. Through schools and through other aspects of the training programme, trainees will work towards becoming strong professionals as teachers.

Scholarships of £25,000 are available in maths, physics and chemistry for high-quality graduates with a 2:1 or first-class degree.  Scholarships are awarded by professional bodies for these subjects and further information can be found on the 'Get Into Teaching' website.

Bursaries: academic year 2016/17
Funding for teacher training is available for eligible graduates who are starting their training in the 2016/17 academic year on postgraduate routes.  Funding amounts will vary depending on the subject you intend to teach and your degree classification or highest relevant academic qualification.

To encourage the best graduates to enter the profession, financial incentives are offered to trainees intending to train in priority subjects.  More details on the Scholarships and Bursaries can be found here.

You do not need to apply for a bursary – if you are enrolled on a non-salaried postgraduate course and meet the eligibility criteria below, you will begin receiving payments at the beginning of your course.

Student finance
You can apply for loans and grants for your teacher training through the SLC (Student Loan Company).  

Types of help for new full-time higher education students include:

  • Tuition Fee Loans to cover the full cost of tuition fees
  • Maintenance Loans and grants to cover living costs
  • Grants for living costs to cover the cost of living expenses
  • Students can also get extra support if they have children or adult dependants, or a disability or a specific learning difficulty
