On Saturday 4 November 2017, Scarborough Museums Trust will commemorate the 99th anniversary of Wilfred Owen’s death with the unveiling of a specially produced bust of the celebrated war poet, created by award-winning artist Anthony Padgett.

The commemoration, beginning at 11.00am, will see the cold-cast bronze bust revealed to the public in its new place of residence, Scarborough Art Gallery. The unveiling will be be accompanied by a reading of some of Owen’s poems by members of the Wilfred Owen Association including Miners, which was penned during the poet’s time staying at what is now the Clifton Hotel, North Bay.

At 11.45am Anthony Padgett, sculptor of Wilfred Owen and author of War of the Poets will be giving an illustrated talk for visitors. Anthony will speak about Wilfred Owen’s interesting life, which was sadly cut short just a week before the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918, along with his motivations for creating, and the process of making, the bust.

Anthony’s talk will discuss conflicts between the poets of the war and the beginnings of Modernism, particularly Scarborough’s own Sitwell poets and the relationship of Owen to T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf and James Joyce.

The bust was offered to Scarborough by Anthony via the Civic Society and local branch of the Wilfred Owen Association and was accepted by Scarborough Museums Trust on behalf of the town. The sculpture is part of a series of ten created by the artist, specifically for organisations and sites connected with Wilfred Owen.
