Teach & Travel China

This programme offers you the perfect opportunity to live in China for 22 weeks to work and then travel afterwards. Gain your TEFL certificate and teach English in a Chinese school.

Do you want the 'real' China experience? Do you long for experiences that go beyond the standard advice of the guide and visits to tourist attractions? Then this programme is for you!

This programme offers you the perfect opportunity to live in China for 22 weeks to work and then travel afterwards. Gain your TEFL certificate and teach English in a Chinese school.

China is the worlds 3rd largest country and still largely unknown, with an affordable cost of living and good transportation network. Living abroad as a teacher in China gives you long-term contact with the unique culture, food, and people.

This particular programme is uniquely designed for people who want to spend an extended period of time in China as you will have the opportunity to explore in a way that many tourists cannot. Not only will you spend the first four weeks of the programme in Beijing with other teachers, but the rest of your teach abroad placement (for 18 weeks) will be in a different area of China where you will get to know local communities.

All of the preparation and training needed to participate is provided as part of the programme and will ensure you are fully ready to positively impact the students you are working with.

The initial 4-week training is the theoretical part of the TEFL, with the 18-week teaching placement completing and validating your certificate.

Teaching abroad in China is perfect if you are looking to take time off from school, a break from work, or just need a change!

The Programme

How it works

Training and Orientation

With the China Teach Abroad programme, you will spend your first four weeks learning how to teach English as a foreign language and receive a TEFL certificate upon successful completion. During your training, there will also be an orientation to China, Mandarin language lessons, social and cultural trips. The four week training and orientation will take place in Beijing.

You will spend Monday through Friday in an intensive course to prepare you for your teaching experience ahead. You will learn about practical classroom techniques, improve English language awareness, and practice what you learned with local Chinese students.

You will learn some Chinese caliligraphy and try some Tai Chi with our professional instructors during the orientation too!

Beijing is the historical, cultural and political centre of China so you will never be stuck for things to do! There will be trips to The Great Wall, Olympic Stadium, The Summer Palace and many more awesome places!

Teacher Placement

After the training programme, you will receive a placement at a Chinese school for 3-4 months. where you will earn 2,000 RMB (approx £200) per month plus a 2,500 RMB (£250) completion bonus.

Placement locations are all over China, and will reflect your strengths and skills. Some are in more urban areas and some rural. You will always be placed with or very close to other programme participants.

You will be able to indicate a preference for the age of the students you would like to work with in China. Age groups are:

  • Primary school: 6 – 11 years
  • High school: 12 – 18 years
  • University/college: 18+

As your placement in China is linked to your visa, you will be required to sign an agreement with the school to validate your visa. This agreement is a standard contract that outlines your duties, accommodation, transport, and termination clauses.

Responsibilities

Although these will vary from school to school, the following is a common guide. Classroom duties include:

  • Teaching conversational English to a range of classes at the school for up to 20 hours per week OR as an assistant to a local teacher delivering English classes
  • Classroom administration (taking attendance, marking homework, reporting grades)
  • Preparation of teaching materials and lessons
  • Participation in after-school activities and cultural events

Remember - although you will definitely be working, you will also have lots of time to socialize with the local community and other teachers. Once a month, all the teachers placed in your region will get together for the weekend in order to catch up, debrief, and have fun!
