Introduction to Student Engagement in Higher Education

A focus on student engagement in higher education is a long-standing practice as a means for enhancement in UK Higher Education.

This session will introduce the core areas of practice at Portsmouth and in the wider sector, where sector bodies place emphasis on engaging students in decision-making and feedback, as well as providing an engaging learner experience where students are at the heart of the system. Providing an engaging higher education experience is a core theme across Academic Development and this session will also expand further on the key theories and agendas around student engagement to give colleagues a road map ahead for future developmental sessions. The session will also cover core theories and scholarship relating to student engagement in contemporary higher education.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Navigate and articulate the core debates and arrays of practice relating to student engagement in UK Higher Education & at the University of Portsmouth.
  • Discuss the different definitions and agendas relating to student engagement, including student voice, feedback and participation.
  • Identify areas of student engagement for development in your context, including action planning activities to support your area of delivery.
